In this course you will learn how the skills of being a football agent (now called intermediaries). The MBA will give you an in-depth knowledge of the workings of a football intermediary. This MBA has been writ- ten by professionals in the business, who will also be involved on the teaching.

Anyone who wants to work in the football industry, but more specifically, those that are interested in becoming football intermediaries. The course is suited to former professional footballers who want  to remain in the football industry


If you have not worked in the football industry, either in the business side or as a professional footballer, we will require that you hold a bachelor’s degree in any discipline. 


The course will last approximately 18 months of coursework, and then another 4 months to sub- mit a project on some aspect of the business of football.


The course has no written exams. each module is assessed by means of a written assignment at the end.

Introduction to studying at Masters level

This module provides students with an appreciation of the requirements of Masters study in terms of the reading that must be carried out and the need for critical reflection.

Additionally students are facilitated in the use of methods of asynchronous learning that is used in an online programme. There are techniques to develop students’ confidence and understanding of research methods used in business and organisation.

Business research methods (20 credits)

A thorough grounding and use of all main techniques of research both quantitative and qualitative (especially SPSS and NVivo) will be studied. The critical importance of action learning will be emphasised as well as the statistical training necessary to effectively evaluate the research data.

Managing finance (20 credits

Studying on this module will allow you to develop a deep understanding of the key principles of financial accounting, management accounting and finance. These principles will be studied in the context of real world organizations with a critical focus upon the levels of analysis and interpretation of financial information.

Strategic management (20 credits)

This module will evaluate and appraise the strategic approaches utilised by organisations, whatever their size or sector of activity. The view that strategy is seen as the long-term direction of an organisation and these three critical elements of the strategy formulation are explored in depth.

Managing human resources & people (20 credits)

This module will explore the practical implications of the human resource management policies and examine how people are the key resource all organisational success. Whilst there will be a focus upon functional activities such as the recruitment, selection, development, retention and reward of employees, the role of HR at the ‘top table’ will be explored in some detail.

Strategic management (20 credits)

This module will evaluate and appraise the strategic approaches utilised by organisations, whatever their size or sector of activity. The view that strategy is seen as the long-term direction of an organisation and these three critical elements of the strategy formulation are explored in depth.

Sports & Contract Law (20 credits)

Studying on this module will allow you to develop a deep understanding of the key principles of contracts and the importance of having one that is beneficial to your players. The module also introduces the rapidly developing area of sports law and the consequences of recent landmark cases.

The Business of Football and the Football Intermediary (20 credits)

This module will help you develop and implement marketing plans and strategies across a range of sectors in both domestic and inter- national markets. A key element of marketing activity is the analysis and evaluation of promotion and sales techniques and strategies and these will be explored using real world case examples. The second part of this module is business economics. It will help you as a manager to understand the opportunities and threats that exist within the internal and external environments. This will ultimately lead to an improvement in overall decision making and will lead to better allocation of resources.

Dissertation (40 credits)

This module is the culmination of the programme of study that requires you to undertake a piece of independent research that looks to link theory to practice. The dissertation is designed for continual feedback throughout the module with you having access to an individual online supervisor to enable close interaction to take place. Research methods training will be provided to allow you to have a deep understanding of the approaches that can be taken. If you are opting for a specialism pathway, then the research for the dissertation must be undertaken in the area of specialism chosen.

Module – Professional Football Agent (20 ECTS)

The Master of Business Administration is a 2 year online with optional blended onsite workshops.

The degree carries the standard ECTS credits recognised across Europe through the Bologna agreement.  Delivery consists of pre-recorded lectures and support materials delivered online and on-demand. The coursework is supplemented by synchronous webinars and online tutorials delivered through the college virtual learning environment.

Each MBA carries 90 ECTS credits and take two years to complete online and/or blended. Assessment is by written assignment and no written examinations. Assignments are graded as fail. Pass, merit or distinction. Each assignment contributes to the final MBA grade achieved.

Module Focus: The Football Intermediary

To be a successful and respected football intermediary, you must understand the correct protocols and how to approach the football clubs. You need to make yourself and your client catch the attention of busy coaches and club management. This module is deigned to do just that. Taught be expert professional intemediaries, an opportunity to learn how the secret world of the football agent works. Sixteen topics that comprise this module provide the most indepth and practically grounded course available anywhere.

As soccer grows globally, more ethical agents are needed. After the deregulation of the profession by FIFA, the barriers to entry have been greatly reduced. From 1 April 2015, the old FIFA Players Agents Regulations (FIFA PAR) were abandoned. They were replaced by the FIFA Regulations on Working with Intermediaries (Intermediaries Regulations). In short, the Intermediaries Regulations did away with the previously established licensing system, which required agents to have passed an examination and to have in place professional indemnity insurance. Instead, it has been replaced with a system in which any natural or legal person can act as an intermediary, provided they have first registered at national level. It also advises players and clubs to adopt certain “benchmarks” regarding remuneration payable in each transaction. Module Focus: Scouting For Intermediaries

The Professional Football Scouts Association are the UK’s leading provider of talent identification training to football clubs across the Premier and Football League. With a member base of over 3000 it is the aim of the PFSA to liaise with all governing bodies and professional/non-professional leagues on behalf of all member scouts. Effective scouting is an integral part of being a successful football intermediary. In order to establish your reputation, you need to be able to bring the right players to the club – in other words, give them the players they are looking for. You can quickly loose you reputation by introducing players that are not of the required standard. This module is delivered by elite senior football scouts from the English Premier and Football League. Who is John Viola?

Coming from a financial services background over 25 years ago to become one of the first FIFA registered football agents in the UK, John is a vastly experienced agent having negotiated several high profile and global transfers throughout his career.

John became one of the first modern football agents in the UK in 1995 and has conducted transfers worldwide, at the highest level and to the highest standard.

Some notabIe accomplishments during Johns career as an intermediary include; taking a Real Madrid player to England, breaking a UK club’s record transfer fee and represented a Brazilian World Cup and Champions League winner.

He has dealt with some of the highest profile players in the world, such as Luis Figo and representing hugely talented players such as Roberto Carlos among many more.

John is respected by his peers and is well placed to handle all the complex areas surrounding the world of football today; from sourcing record breaking player moves to negotiating club sales.


Phil McTaggart is a highly motivated and creative professional with 21 years’ experience working within the elite business world of football.

After joining John Viola in the football industry he quickly become the youngest officially registered agent in Europe at the time. Since then Phil has made strides in the industry and earned his repuation as a leading professional in the field.

Vincent is a Professor of International Business and Strategic Management at the Uninettuno University of Rome and is also a visiting professor at two other business schools in Naples and Geneva. Vincent holds a PhD in business strategy and numerous other degrees in Law, Education, Physics and Data Analytics from University of Cambridge, Kings College London, Maynooth, Aberdeen and Dublin. Vincent is also attached to University of Cambridge as a researcher into adult online learning and is a member of their prestigious CEDiR group. Vincent was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2016.

Vincent is also currently CEO of Vernier Europe, a subsidiary of Vernier Software and Technology, the world’s largest manufacturer of digital data collection technologies for schools. He has extensive experience of international business in many different sectors including education materials and equipment, retail and engineering. Vincent has founded several successful companies and has served as Managing Director of companies in Ireland and the UK for the past 25 years.
